Grow Your Healthy Relationship Checklist

The Checklist includes a list with every card in the deck. You can use this Checklist to:

  • Track Your Progress. This is especially useful if you have been selecting your cards at random, because you can see at a glance which cards you have reviewed and which cards are still waiting to be explored.

  • Rate Each Card. The Checklist includes a column where you can “rate” the cards, on a scale from 1-5. You can use this rating based upon how meaningful and useful that card and quality is to your unique relationship. Should you ever want a “tune-up” for your relationship in the future, this checklist and the ratings column will help you identify which cards to review first.

Tips for Applying the Communication Skills Cards

Good communication is probably the single most important skill that will help you develop and grow a healthy relationship.  We wanted to offer you this handout, to present a more thorough explanation of each of the Communication cards skills.  Also, we included some illustrative examples, to help you learn, understand and then practice these communication skills to the fullest.

As you read this handout with your partner, we invite you to discuss the sample scenarios. Improvise, have fun, and explore how each of you would react if this were an actual situation in your own relationship. Consider two versions of those conversations:

  1. What you might have said “before” knowing these communication skills, and

  2. How you could communicate “after” using the featured communication skill.

You can avoid many unnecessary misunderstandings and repair the occasional upset using good communication. We encourage you to become familiar with these different communication skills, and then practice, practice, practice… until these become second nature.
